Rector's Message
Thank you for visiting the St Swithun’s Website. We hope you will come and join us at one of our Sunday or mid-week services. Details of the location of our gatherings and the times of services are all available on this website.
As a church, we have a long history in this local area. The first Anglican gathering was held in July 1901 although a church building was not constructed on Pymble hill for another eleven years. Those early members were predominantly local orchardists, farmers and farm-hands when Pymble was a semi-rural, fruit-growing area of Sydney.
Today, the orchards are all gone and the land is highly valued. Our congregations comprise people from different walks of life who live within about a 5km radius of the church. All professions are represented across the four services, there are some trades and technical people and a growing group of retired or semi-retired people. We are a very diverse group of people coming from over a dozen nationalities and we see our ministry as one for all ages and stages of life.
Our purpose statement is summed up in the words of the Apostle Paul to the Thessalonians:
“We loved you so much that we were delighted to share with you not only the Gospel of God but our lives as well.” (1Thessalonians 2, vs 8a).
We are an Anglican Church within the Diocese of Sydney. Our tradition is, and has always been, evangelical and reformed. We are committed to the liturgical structure of the Book of Common Prayer but there is great diversity in the expression of our worship over the four Sunday services. The two morning services are traditional with a robed choir at the second service. The two evening services are contemporary and relaxed in style but, like the morning services, have a clear liturgical structure and common elements. Holy Communion is celebrated each week at the first service and once a month at each of the other three services.
On the website you will find information about the many groups which meet and the ministry areas in which we are involved in the Pymble area and beyond.
Please feel free to contact our staff or me for any further information or assistance.
Best wishes,
Roger Chilton
Rector
